Strange Referrers

Apparently pictures of my Wife are highly sought after since my referrer logs show search key phrases such as:

embarrassing pictures heather
pictures of heather lee
heather lee pictures

It does make for something more interesting than the never-ending code red probes my box seems to get from peers on the Verizon network. Sadly there are no pictures of Heather to be found on her site, embarrassing or otherwise.

Try here.

Gallery Upgrade

I updated gallery, which is the backend for our photo gallery, to the 1.3.3 release to fix a security bug with the publish_xp_docs.php feature. Apparently recent versions of gallery include the option to integrate with the native Windows XP publish this file to the web feature. This is a great feature since it eliminates the need for using the Gallery Remote Java application to add photos on XP clients.

Happy New Year (Early)

Just wanted to wish my friends Jonah, Tomomi, and John an early happy new year since they are in Japan and on the other side of the international dateline.

Heather and I miss you guys - we hope you have a great 2003.

X Window Managers

I run my Gentoo box headless, however, it is convenient to be able to be able to fire up a desktop session (VNC tunneled through SSH) remotely on occasion. TWM isn’t exactly my idea of a great desktop environment so after some consideration I decided on Fluxbox. So far I am impressed - it is small, lightweight, fast (even over a tunneled VNC session), and didn’t take hours to emerge.

Hell, after playing with it for a few hours I am considering trying to get it working on my SPARC box at work. It seems like a much nicer day to day desktop environment than the Sun Gnome Beta - all I typically need are some terminals and Netscape.

Generating SSL certificates for mod_SSL on Gentoo

I spent a few hours pulling out my hair trying to figure out how to self-sign SSL certificates for use with Apache & mod_SSL on my Gentoo GNU/Linux box. The mod_SSL FAQ describes the process, however, it is not applicable for the default Gentoo configuration of mod_SSL. I couldn’t find sign.sh in order to use my private CA to sign my CSR.

Fortunately some searching of the Gentoo forums found the answer.

/usr/lib/ssl/mod_ssl/gid-mkcert.sh

This script will create the CA certificate, generate a CSR and use the newly created CA certificate to sign the CSR creating a real SSL certificate suitable for use with apache.

Awstats under mod_perl

After some hassle I was able to get AWStats working under mod_perl. The trouble largely was my lack of experience with using mod_perl. I ended up creating an Alias for the AWStats icons directories since I was having problems with mod_perl trying to execute them otherwise. I figure there is a more elegant way to accomplish this, however, I need to read up on mod_perl some more.

Dolby Digital goodness

My in-laws gave me a Sony home theater kit for the holidays. This is something I have wanted for quite a while; however, Heather and I could never bring ourselves to purchase one.

After spending an hour or so hooking it up (including a trip to Fry’s to get some optical cables) I popped in the T2 Ultimate Edition DVD to run it through its paces. After having the system for a few days it is hard to imagine how we listened to movies and TV without it.

Now I just need to figure out how to train the Dish network remote to control the audio volume on the receiver and explain the whole setup to Heather.

The tree that never was

Last week Heather and I got our first real Christmas tree. In our last few residences we were not allowed to have them since they pose a fire hazard. Heather was pretty excited since we haven’t ever been able to decorate for Christmas before.

Americas Pastime

I caught on the radio news today that Portland is one of the cities being considered for the relocation of the Expos MLB franchisee. Of course the plan calls for the taxpayers to foot a portion of the bill. I thought I left this kind of crap behind in Milwaukee where we paid to build a new stadium (cost overruns in all) for a substandard team than many residents could care less about.

Telemarketers

I just thought this was too bizarre. I take a day off to clean the house before the in-laws arrive tomorrow and since I’m home I decide to answer all of the unsolicited calls we receive during the day. Now granted I pay my local Telco a fee to “protect” me from these calls in the first place but somehow we manage to get them anyway.
