Product names

I got a good chuckle after reading how Microsoft has again renamed their upcoming Windows server products. It was bad enough when they kind of waffled on the name (moving it from .Net Server 2002 to .Net Server 2003) during the DevCon 2002 keynote talks now they are dropping the .Net part completely. I wish they would do something useful instead and drop the damn year notation in the product name.

Even more amusing is that many of the binaries still use the old WinNT notation. Granted this isn’t a unique problem for Microsoft. At work I have joy of dealing with WebSphere MQ (a.k.a MQ Series) and Sun ONE Enterprise Server (a.k.a. IPlanet Enterprise Server and/or Netscape Enterprise Server).

What would we do without marketing people?

  1. Whenever Microsoft gets me annoyed, I just spell their abbreviated name as M$.

Yes Microsoft, you have a lot of money, and I’m aware of it. How do you like them apples?
