We now have more than just a piece of dirt. Here is how the site of our home looks as of 5/31/03.

the Italian Job

We saw the Italian Job this afternoon. It features Markey Mark leading a group of criminals to seek revenge on one who crossed them. The plot was predictable but the film was entertaining in spite of this.

Beaverton Farmers Market

Today while we were out we came across the Beaverton Farmers Market. Since it was a nice day we decided to stop and check it out. There were an amazing number of fresh flowers and plants for sale in addition to organic foodstuffs.

While we were there we enjoyed some of the fresh strawberries that are in season. The nice thing is the market isn’t too far from where our new house will be.

The SCO lawsuit

Recently the mainstream press has been covering the recent legal action the SCO Group has brought against IBM regarding the alleged transfer of licensed Unix intellectual property into GNU/Linux. Given the complex historical ownership of the genetic Unix code, the prior legal settlement over the AT&T / BSD lawsuit and the subsequent recognition genetic Unix incorporated a good deal of BSD code, and the seemingly bizarre actions of SCO since the start of the case this has the making of both a very lengthy and complex legal battle.

Fortunately for the average Joe someone has taken the time to summarize the recent events in the context of the Dukes of Hazzard in an effort to make them easier to understand. I think this is extremely funny - perhaps Court TV has a new show concept.

Memorial Day

I indulged Heather and we spent Memorial Day at the Oregon Zoo.

For me the highpoint of the day had to be going on the “Deep Sea the Ride” underwater exploration simulation. Essentially you get strapped into a seat and go on a pretend deep sea dive to find a giant squid. The seat is on motors and shakes and tilts based upon the on-screen action. The voice action was so over the top (ala Iron Chef) that the whole thing was hilarious.

I took a bunch of pictures during the day that can be found here.

Bruce Almighty

We saw Bruce Almighty on Sunday afternoon. It was surprisingly funny given the moralistic “god is going to teach you a lesson” premise. At least the message was a good one - we each have the power to effect positive change in our lives and we don’t need to sit around waiting on God to do it for us. Overall it was funny with out being overly preachy, although I did think the ending was trite.

I relocated our photo galleries to their new home @ spendy.org. I wrote a quick mod_rewrite rule so any direct links to content at the old URL shouldn’t be broken either.

Pornstar: The Legend of Ron Jeremy

We watched Pornstar: The Legend of Ron Jeremy which is a documentary of the porn legend and icon Ron Jeremy. I didn’t expect much of this movie but I was surprised to find it to be quite tasteful. If you look behind the icon you find Ron is an average guy - a former teacher who wants a wife and kinds and dreams of becoming a legitimate actor but is trapped by the stigma of being an adult star. No matter what he does or where he goes he will always be Ron Jeremy, Porn Star.

spendy.org

For a while I have wanted a simple one word domain name to use for some general purpose content and other projects. After spending some time trying to find a catchy word that wasn’t taken and easy for me to spell (contrary to what you may have heard I am a poor speller) I ended up picking up spendy.org. The word “spendy” must be a West Coast thing as many people here use it to describe what us former Midwesterners would call “expensive“.
