Adventures with Bluetooth
I finally found my Bluetooth dongle (it was still packed away from our recent move) so I decided to try and give it a go with my Nokia 3650 smart phone. Unfortunately not all Bluetooth adapters were created equally.
I had the unfortunate luck to purchase the Ambicom Air2Net Bluetooth Wireless “Solution” which according to both Nokia and Ambicom is not actually compatible with my phone. One would think that since Bluetooth is a standard that any Bluetooth complaint device should be able to interface with any other Bluetooth compliant device. Fortunately some googling yielded a workable solution.
I came across this link in the Howard Forums. In a nutshell this is what I had to do to make it work:
- Uninstall the Ambicom drivers (they sucked anyway so no big loss)
- Uninstall the Nokia PC Suite
- Download the Tecom Bluetooth drivers.
I had a bit of trouble tracking them down so here is a local mirror. - Install the Tecom drivers
- Reinstall the Nokia PC Suite
- Bond the PC and the 3650
- Configure the Bluetooth COM port for use with the Nokia PC Suite
- Start up the PC Suite and things should work as normal.
One added bonus is that the Tecom drivers are ten times nicer than the Ambicom ones.
I tried to do what you did with your Ambicom with the Nokia 3650…I didn’t work for me, is there something I’m doing wrong or is there something you left out of your directions? I keep getting a error whenever I tried to get the phone to stay connected to the CPU and I couldn’t get Nokia’s software to recognize the phone was there even though the bluethooth was activated on my cell.
Hi Patrick,
Sorry to hear your having trouble. The directions I posted cover all the steps but I glossed over some of the details in the Bluetooth device bonding process (the Howard Forums URL above explains in more detail).
Assuming you uninstalled the Ambicom drivers and reinstalled the Tecom drivers successfully you should be able to get them to connect. Before the Nokia PC Suite will recognize the phone you need to bond your PC to the phone and establish a virtual Bluetooth COM port between the two devices. You should be able to do both using the Bluetooth icon in the system tray. Once that is done you need to configure the Nokia PC Suite to use the correct COM port for communication with your phone. This can be done by clicking on the icon in the system tray (the one that looks like two grey triangles) and selecting the correct COM port that corresponds to the Bluetooth connection you established earlier. After all this is done fire up the Nokia PC Suite and it should work as expected.
I have found it has worked reliably for me once I got it setup.
Hope this helps!
Hi, I was wondering if you have an idea if this driver will work also for the EIO wavelinker bluetooth dongle. The drivers that came with it is no good. I’ve downloaded the latest version from their site but it’s not any better. Thanks.
I tested it already. And it’s working! The TECOM bluetooth software is far better than the one that came with my device. Thanks a lot for your write up.

You can find a link to the Tecom drivers in my post above. Installing them is pretty straightforward. Good luck!
Hi,
I’ve been trying to get my Ambicom Compact Flash to connect to my Nokia 3650. In the above instructions, were you using the ambicom USB device or the Ambicom compact flash device. I dont seem to be able to get them to work. any insight would be appreciated. Basically looking for a compact flash bluetooth device that I can use both on my pocket pc 2002 and laptop and on my 3650

I have a USB Bluetooth dongle. Not sure if the drivers work with any CF cards or not. You might want to ask your question in the HowardForums.com Series60 phone forum as quite a few Nokia 3650 owners ask Bluetooth questions there. I shot you an email with this suggestion as well.
Good luck!
I’m also in the boat holding onto both an Ambicom CF to PCMCIA Bluetooth card, and a Toshiba Bluetooth card and have had NO success with either of them.
I’ve tried altering the widcomm pcmcia drivers which I found through belkins site, however the device still will not function.
I’m pretty irritated at this point because my Acer computer SHOULD have built in bluetooth or the option, but acer denied it to the united states.
Thanks for your tiem if anyone can clear up whetheer i’m screwed.
Like I mentioned earlier I have no idea on any CF / PC Card Bluetooth gear as I don’t own any. To save some aggravation you might want to check out a USB Bluetooth dongle as I and others have had good luck getting them to work.
