Contrary to what FedEx may think our house has an address that does actually exist. One of the perils of living in new construction is that our street doesn’t yet show up on maps. Whenever we have something delivered to the house I end up trying to explain that the address is in fact correct and that their maps are simply out of date. Even after I manage to convince them and get the item delivered we end up going through it again the next time they have something to deliver.
Hopefully they will get updated area maps soon.

I migrated the MySQL database that serves as the backend for this site as part of the recent upgrade to the box hosting this site. I had been putting off upgrading since I knew I was going to have to do this and my MySQL DBA skills are rather weak.
Fortunately after a bit of digging around in the MySQL documentation I figured out the migration steps. They whole process ended up being pretty straightforward and painless.
For the next time I happen to need to do this here is my mini-HOWTO:

After much procrastination I finally got around to upgrading the box that hosts this blog. I had originally planned on doing this over the holidays but I got distracted.
Now that the dust has settled I’m hoping that MovableType still works.

Heather and I finally picked up a copy of Underworld on DVD tonight after our earlier problem trying to find a copy of it for sale anywhere. Presumably the recent bad weather caused the stores to not be restocked in a timely manner - either that or it is way more popular than I would have anticipated with the people living on the west side of metro-Portland.

I read over at Neowin that today Microsoft has released a new version of Services for Unix and now offers it as a free download.
Like Cygwin, SFU provides a “Unix-like” environment for Windows providing a real shell to work with and all of the typical GNU tools. Interop Systems (developers of the Interix technology which SFU is based upon) offers a host of ported software here. I was first introduced to the product back at the 2002 Server DevCon and after sitting through a technology talk and product demo I was impressed.

Heather and I saw Kill Bill again last night at the Compass Room. After seeing the movie again I must say I was impressed with the way sound was used to capture the feel of what was unfolding on screen.
I’m eager for the release of volume 2 later this year.

After being cooped up at home for the last four days I decided to brave the ice and snow and try to make it to work. The ride in wasn’t so bad (nothing worse than I had experienced while living in Wisconsin), however, it would be nice if they would plow the streets in my neighborhood. I had the most trouble just trying to get my car out of the alley behind our home. Almost no one made it into work today so the place has the eerie dawn of the dead type feel to it.
Fortunately it looks like it will finally warm up over the weekend so things can get back to normal.

When I woke up this morning I had a feeling I wouldn’t be going anywhere again. The roads are still to icy for my little Miata to make across town to work safely. I am actually to the point where I am starting to get worksick. Unfortunately the current weather forecast isn’t promising:
