One remote to rule them all

With the recent addition of a new TV I am hoping that I can come up with a universal remote capable of actually controlling the myriad of consumer electronics devices populating our living room. As we add components the number or remotes seem to proliferate yet none of them seem capable of controlling any other device effectively. I never was successful in getting the multifunction remote that came with my satellite box (a DishPVR) to control my A/V receiver. The multifunction remote that came bundled with the TV looks like it might have some promise as there are enough extra buttons one would expect it to be capable of controlling something else besides the TV.
This may be a little late in the game, but we bought the Harmony H688, and love it! It controls everything, including the basement lights.
