Wordpress

Since I couldn’t sleep due to my teeth I decided to take the plunge and convert my blog from MovableType over to Wordpress 1.2 which happened to be released this morning.

The transition was pretty painless. There is a great tutorial here which walks through the process. I ended up using this script to redirect my old static archives to their new dynamic Wordpress counterparts. At first I had some trouble redirecting the links to my old RDF and RSS syndication feeds however I found the following bit of mod_rewrite voodoo did the trick:

RewriteRule ^index.xml /blog/wp-rss2.php [QSA]
RewriteRule ^index.rdf /blog/wp-rdf.php [QSA]

I still need to work on updating the default stylesheet but otherwise things seem pretty good. If anything seems broken drop me an email.

the tooth

This afternoon I lost what little wisdom I have left by having my top two wisdom teeth extracted.

Opera for Series 60

A new version of the Opera web browser was released recently for Nokia’s Series 60 platform. It has to be the most useful application on my smartphone and beats the hell out of the bundled WAP browser. I upgraded my copy last night and so far have been impressed with the improvements to the usability of the product.

Oh the humanity

I finished all of the coursework for my major on Wednesday. While going over the forms to graduate and receive my diploma I notice that I am short 1 humanities credit from meeting my graduation requirement. Fortunately my academic counselor was able to place me in a course that will fulfill this requirement. In less than seven weeks I will have finally completed my long journey towards a college degree.

MovableType 3.0

The latest version of MovableType was released today along with a new pricing structure. A free version is still available and the personal version is priced at $70. Both versions offer less functionality than the 2.x release I am using now.

For the last two years I have enjoyed using MovableType and I appreciate that Six Apart has made it free for non-commercial use. I would consider purchasing a personal license but given its limitations I simply don’t feel it is worth the investment. I have no interest in continuing on with the free version since it offers even less features and there it is doubtful it will continue on in the long-term since Six Apart appears to be only focused on the commercialization of their products.

For now I’ll stay on 2.x until I can find a product that better suits my needs. WordPress looks promising.

Nokia 3650 Annoyance

I love my Nokia 3650 phone but lately I have noticed it has an annoying habit of having the clock drift severely. This happens regardless if I have the phone set to automatically get the time from T-Mobile (my carrier) or if I have it set manually. Has anyone seen this before?

Searching the Series60 forum on HowardForums didn’t turn up anything useful. Perhaps this is a bug in the firmware in my phone as mine came with quite old firmware. I wish Nokia made it easy for end-users to update the firmware in their phones since taking it into a Nokia authorized service center seems like such a hassle.

the Punisher

I saw the Punisher a few weekends ago when it opened and never got around to writing about it. Marvel managed to adapt one of my favorite comic book antihero to the big screen (for the second time) without doing too bad of a job. The film was not a masterpiece nor was it a train wreck.

On the seventh day I did yard work

After months of procrastination Heather and I decided to do start landscaping our side yard. Some weeding was in order before we could start working on the space. Twenty-six bags of dirt later we now have raised flowerbeds and the first phase of our landscaping project complete. After a day of work it is already a vast improvement. Next weekend’s task is to cover the beds in bark dust, build a sitting area, and complete the path down the length of our yard.
