MOTORIZR

Last weekend my RAZR bit the dust after taking an accidental drop into some water. After drying it out for a day it was still toast so I took this as an opportunity to pick up a new handset. I opted for a Motorola RIZR instead since with rebate it ended up costing the same price as another RAZR. So far I really like the phone – the higher resolution camera is great, the MicroSD storage card is a welcome and much needed improvement, the rubbery body coating has a good hand feel, and the battery life is supposedly improved vs. the RAZR.

Since I purchased a T-Moblie branded phone there is the typical carrier BS where some of the features of the phone are intentionally crippled. Just like on my RAZR I found that the included email client was disabled. Fortunately it was easy to fix using P2K Tools to modify the seem. P2K Tools has come a long way since I last used it to modify my RAZR so this was a snap to fix. It is a Windows only app but worked just fine under Parallels.

So far my only gripe is that I can’t get iSync to recognize it as supported in order to sync my contacts. Google turned up an iSync phone plugin for the RIZR; however, my handset appears to be a newer hardware revision and isn’t recognized as a valid model. I need to tinker with it some more and hopefully I can get it working.

  1. I just got my RIZR today and was able to get iSync to work with the plugin that you linked to. Had to make sure I created the right folder and restart iSync and then it worked perfectly.

  2. Are you syncing over USB or Bluetooth? If your syncing over Bluetooth do you mind letting me know the firmware revision on your phone? I’m curious to see how it compares to mine. I was able to get mine working via USB; however, Bluetooth syncing with iSync is still an issue.

  3. Create PhonePlugins folder in /Library and drop the plugin in to the folder. If you are terminal happy then do the following:

    cd /Library
    mkdir PhonePlugins
    cp pathtopluginfile /Library/PhonePlugins

    Launch iSync.

  5. how do u get the time to show on the screen on the rizr bought mine unlocked

Check out howardforums.com or modmymoto.com – there are a number of threads on how to modify your RIZR to fix this. Apparently it is a common problem. I was fortunate that my T-Mobile handset worked as desired with the stock flash.

    Good luck!

  7. I was just wondering how did you get the picture to look right in iSync? I downloaded the .tiff but I am not sure where to put it. I tried to put it in the folder with the plugin and restarted iSync, but that didn’t work.

  8. @Jared

You need to open the plugin bundle by right clicking and selecting “show package contents”. Inside will be a .tiff file that is used by iSync to display the phone. Swapping the .tiff file for one that looks like the RIZR will do the trick. The .tiff file name is referenced in the .plist file in the bundle – either rename the .tiff to match the default or simply edit the .plist accoringly. After that restarting iSync should do the trick.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the help!

    @Everyone

Also just to add (incase anyone else has this problem)if you are still having trouble with iSync and bluetooth after you have applied the plugin. Remove your Phone from the bluetooth devices (via System Preferences), delete your iSync .phone file found in DiskName:~/Library/Phones also known as /home/Library/Phones and then repair the phone (via System Preferences). At lest thats how I got bluetooth working.

  10. Jared,

So you were able to get yours to sync via Bluetooth? If so do you mind posting or emailing me the firmware version on your phone? I am curious to see how it compares to mine.

    Thanks!

    Jon
