home again

July 10th, 2005

Heather and I had a blast on our vacation to southern Oregon. Heather has a much more detailed account of our trip that can be found here. On our way back home today we stopped off at the Oregon Country Fair which was a lot of fun and a great place to people watch. There was a surprising (and pleasant) number of topless people wandering about the fair.

We took a ton of pictures throughout our trip that I’ll post tomorrow once I get the digital camera unloaded.

It burns

Judging from the crowd at my local Coffee People I am not the only one who is out trying to beat the heatwave here in Portland today. We seriously need AC at home.

a Devil Inside

March 13th, 2005

Last night Heather and I caught Theater Vertigo’s performance of a Devil Inside over at Theater! Theater! in NE Portland. It is a dark comedy that tells a tangled tale of family relationships, obsession, a quest for vengeance, missing feet, and a wallpaper devil who may or may not be real. A trailer that does a better job of describing the plot can be seen here. Erin’s boyfriend Nate plays Gene in the cast.

The show runs through April 2nd and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys a dark comedy.

butter churns and hand crafted furniture

March 6th, 2005

Heather and I went out to Portland’s ComedySportz last night and had a blast. Anything that can combine making light of the Amish with William Shatner is alright by me. For anyone thinking of going to check it out the 9:00 PM show is a better deal as it includes a free admission to the “Saturday Late Night” improv which takes place after the regular show for the evening.

things to do in Portland

February 20th, 2005

I love living in Portland because there is never a lack of something interesting to do / see. Last night Heather and I caught the “Suicide Saturday” burlesque show at Devils Point in SE Portland. It featured performances by a few of the SuicideGirls, including the lovely Stormy. Devils Point was clean, couples friendly, and didn’t have a cover / drink minimum.

I love Portland :)

Super Tuesday

November 2nd, 2004

Over the last several days our household has been subject to near nonstop political phone spam. Conan the Destroyer seems particularly persistent calling with “a very important personal message about the election” at least once a day. Other national figures have also been so kind as to spam my answering machine with various prerecorded messages attempting to influence my vote. This leaves me wondering if these types of tactics are actually effective? For me they have the opposite effect they just piss me off. Granted I wouldn’t consider voting for them in the first place, but even if I had a lapse of judgment bombarding me nonstop with unwanted messages deamonizing the opposition aren’t a way to win my vote.

Oregon has the sense to conduct the election by mail so Heather and I did our civic duty over a week ago. It was nice that we had the time to actually read through the provided materials and make more informed decisions. It was a welcome change from voting in Wisconsin where you had to truck down to the poles on election day.

NASCORE

September 12th, 2004

Today Heather and I went to the North American Specialty Coffee & Beverage Retailers’ Expo (NASCORE) that was being held here in Portland. Heather’s school was one of the sponsors of the Expo so we were able to get free tickets to attend and walk around the exhibit hall. I got a chance to sample a lot of good coffee, lust after some neat commercial espresso machines, and leave with a bunch of samples and swag. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon even though neither of us are in the “industry” per say.

Japanese Garden photos

August 1st, 2004

I finally got around to unloading our digital camera and posted the various photos Heather and I took while visiting Portland’s Japanese Garden back on our anniversary. I love living in a city like Portland where there are so many interesting places like this to visit.

Hors d’Oeuvres

July 17th, 2004

Last night Heather and I attended the premiere of Hors d’Oeuvres at Portland’s Stark Raving Theatre. Erin, one of Heather’s classmates, stars in the performance. The play tells the tale of a dinner party that is ultimately doomed to end in disaster. It is both absurd and thought provoking at the same time making for a fantastic play.

It runs through August 14th.
